BIO

Jo FitzGerald is a self-taught contemporary abstract artist based in North Devon, working from her studio and artist-run gallery in Braunton.

Her paintings are bold, expressive and emotionally charged, created through intuitive mark-making, layered colour and a physical process of movement, response and release. Working across canvas, raw linen and paper, Jo explores womanhood, resilience, transformation and the tension between softness and strength.

Jo’s background in advertising, creative direction and interior design continues to shape her instinctive understanding of colour, composition, scale and atmosphere. These experiences inform the way her paintings hold space — not as decoration, but as expressive, physical works with presence and emotional charge.

A Physical, Intuitive Process

Jo works primarily with acrylic, often incorporating ink, charcoal, oil stick and pastel to create texture, depth and intricate surface detail. Her process is expressive, physical and intuitive — a continual movement across the canvas, where gesture, colour and instinct lead the work forward.

Loose geometric forms, vibrant colour fields and dynamic marks emerge through layers of action and response. Each surface holds a sense of rhythm and movement, with earlier marks partially obscured, interrupted or revealed as the painting develops.

Rather than beginning with a fixed image, Jo allows each work to unfold through the act of painting itself. The resulting paintings are bold, layered and emotionally charged, inviting the viewer to look closely and discover new details over time.
