When Choosing Art ..Does Size Matter?

It’s a question that often arises when chatting to clients in the gallery…”what size art should I be considering and is large art better?” Obviously it’s pretty subjective but having dabbled for a while in the world of interior design here’s my two pennies worth on the topic; “Does size really matter when choosing art?

I may be a little biased, as truthfully my favourite paintings to create are on larger canvases, but that’s not the only reason that I say;

'“When it comes to selecting art for your home, size absolutely matters!’

A well-chosen piece of art can transform your space, and when it comes to making an impact, bigger is definitely better. As I often tell my clients, a small painting on a large, expansive wall can feel lost—like a wart on an elephant’s behind!

Here’s 5 reasons why going bold with oversized artwork is a smart choice for your interiors.

1. Big Art Makes a Big Statement

Large art instantly creates a focal point in any room, drawing attention and setting the tone. It doesn’t just fill a wall—it tells a story, anchors the space, and makes a statement about your personal style. In key areas like hallways, entranceways, and living rooms, large, statement art ensures that your walls won’t feel empty or underwhelming.

Here I demonstrate using the same room but two different size paintings. As you can see, even when using two paintings together the space still looks bare and uninteresting, the wall lacks impact rather than being a strong element of the room, with the larger painting the eye is immediately drawn to it and finds interest and intrigue, making the room feel more ‘put together’ and collected.

2. Balance and Proportion Are Key

In rooms with high ceilings, double-height spaces, or expansive walls, scale is everything. A small painting can seem out of place, failing to balance the proportions of the room. A large painting however, harmonises with the architecture, making the space feel complete and intentional. It’s about creating balance between your art and the room’s design elements.

3. Add Drama and Energy

Big art is bold art. It has the power to energise a room with vibrant colours or create a calming atmosphere with soft tones and abstract forms. This sense of drama can elevate a space in a way that smaller pieces simply can’t. It’s particularly effective in open-plan areas or living rooms where you want to create a striking visual moment.

4. Less Is More

Instead of cluttering your walls with lots of small artworks, a single large, bold painting can have a much more significant impact. A single oversized painting paired with minimalist furniture can create a clean, gallery-like feel. The “less is more” approach helps simplify your décor while allowing the art to shine.

5. Perfect for the Heart of Your Home

Larger paintings are ideal for those rooms where you want to create the most impact—whether it’s the entranceway, a dramatic living room, or a double-height feature wall. Big art isn’t just about filling space; it’s about defining it. It’s the difference between a house that looks decorated and a home that feels designed.

So, Is Bigger Better? Absolutely!

When it comes to choosing art, size matters—and the bigger, the better. Oversized artwork can transform your home, turning ordinary spaces into extraordinary ones. It’s about creating a sense of scale, adding personality, and ensuring your walls feel alive.

So, the next time you’re deciding between a large statement piece or a smaller work, remember: don’t let your walls look like a wart on an elephant’s behind. Go big or go home!
