Bursting with Colour: A Moroccan Journey of Inspiration
Colour has always been at the heart of my creative process. It shapes my mood, guides my hand, and brings life to every canvas I touch. Yet, nothing could have prepared me for the vibrant explosion of inspiration that Morocco, especially the Jardin Majorelle in Marrakesh, would evoke within me. This journey reignited and redefined my passion for intense, dazzling pigments — and I can't wait to share how it has impacted my new series of abstract paintings.
The gardens themselves are a symphony of hues: the strongest, most electric blues, emerald greens, and dazzling pops of yellows and oranges. I wandered the paths in awe, watching as sunlight danced through palms, dappling vibrant ceramics and making even the gentlest petals seem to vibrate with intensity. It is here that Saint Laurent's genius becomes so clear: he saw colour not as a mere aesthetic choice but as a language, one capable of expressing the deepest passions and complexities of life.
Marrakesh itself, "The Pink City," was a perfect canvas for this colorful encounter. The dusty, rose-toned buildings and earthy streets provided a stunning contrast to the kaleidoscope of pigments woven throughout daily life. From rich textiles in the souks to hand-painted tiles, to brilliant pigments splashed across walls and decor, the city pulses with energy and creative spirit. It’s an environment where colour is not merely seen but felt deeply, with every bright swath elevating the mundane into something transcendent. The topaz blue skies, nearly impossible in their brilliance, set off each bold stroke like a masterpiece.
And so, here I am, back in my studio, surrounded by paint jars of the very colours that dazzled me in the Jardin Majorelle. I’m brimming with ideas and, frankly, I can hardly keep still. I feel called to harness these intense, high-vibrational pigments and let them dance across my canvases. These colours refuse to be tamed, and I love that. My goal will be to wield their potency delicately, to create abstract works that evoke the vibrancy, warmth, and passion that Marrakesh imprinted upon me. It will be a challenge — keeping my touch light when every instinct wants to dive in fully, giving in to the colour’s demand to be known. But it is a challenge I embrace wholeheartedly.
The beauty of travel is often found in its transformative power — the way it opens our eyes and our hearts. For me, Morocco's sights, sounds, architecture, and people all played a part, but it is the colours that will stay with me forever. They’ve found a new home within me and my work, ready to bring the essence of Marrakesh into the art I create. Here's to embracing bold strokes, vibrant life, and the joy that colours can bring. Here's to the new adventures they lead us on — in paint and beyond.
