Inspiration In The Colours, Energy And People of India.

The journey behind ‘Adsum’

Visit to the flower market in Jaipur, India

As an artist, inspiration can often be elusive, arriving unexpectedly and from the most surprising of places. My recent journey to India was one such moment, a trip that left an indelible mark on my spirit and profoundly influenced my latest collection of paintings; "Adsum."

India is a land of contrasts—a country where ancient traditions coexist with modern life, where every corner is bursting with colors, sounds, and stories. Yet, amid all this, what struck me the most were the women of India. There was a profound sense of connection and camaraderie among them that I hadn’t experienced before. Their vulnerability in a society still navigating complex gender dynamics was evident, yet there was a palpable strength that radiated from them. These women, so full of life, are the backbone of their communities, embodying resilience, courage, and grace.

As I walked through bustling markets and quiet villages, I was captivated by the vibrant saris that many women wore. Each sari was like a canvas of its own, painted with hot pinks, bright oranges, and deep blues—colors that spoke of joy, passion, and an unapologetic presence. These fabrics were more than just clothing; they were statements of individuality and expressions of spirit. There was no place for shrinking violets in these jewel-colored saris; they commanded attention, celebrated femininity, and, most importantly, made the women who wore them seen.

This vibrant tapestry of color and strength found its way into my heart and my work. Upon returning home, I felt an overwhelming urge to translate what I had experienced into my art.

My new collection, "Adsum," is a tribute to the women I encountered and the powerful energy of femininity they embody. The Latin word "Adsum" means "I am here," a declaration that resonates deeply with the spirit I found in India. [read more here]

Through soft hues, gentle strokes, and a celebration of color and lightness, "Adsum" explores the power, vulnerability, and strength inherent in the female spirit. The delicate energy of the women I met is captured in the light brushwork, while their strength and resilience are reflected in the vibrant color palette inspired by the saris. Each painting in the collection is a journey into a realm of ethereal beauty, where the soft and the strong coexist harmoniously, much like the women of India themselves.

This collection is not just about painting; it’s about embracing a profound energy and reflecting on the diverse facets of femininity. It’s about celebrating the beauty of being seen, of standing strong, and of owning one's space in the world.

In creating "Adsum," I hope to share with you the magic I felt in India, to bring to life the stories of the incredible women who inspired me, and to celebrate the vibrant tapestry of strength and grace that defines them. Through my art, I invite you to see the world through their eyes and to be moved by their stories, just as I was.
